17/8/2013 Treat from HL and Sebastian: dinner at Chomp Chomp hawker centre + Wimbly Lu cafe

*Had I went around asking friends or people to join in in the last semester, I could have been to EEE TYVM 2013 dinner @ MBS liao. But the price tag of $110 really put me off for a jobless guy like me. T.T

Thanks HL and sebastian for the treat!

Took an all-bus journey (157 then 73) directly to Chomp Chomp hawker centre while the couple, together with PG and HH came from Serangoon instead. Had some difficulty finding seats for 5 as most tables there are designated for 4. Only 4 tables are designed for 6 seaters. Not very patron friendly hor?

But anyway, had a sumptuous meal there and shall let pics do the talking.

Saw quite a few people with their face and shirt splashed with paint. It turned out that they went to this Color Race which was held at Sentosa. Spend $$ to get splashed? Still need to wash up after that. Weird but I think fun la.

After the dinner, went to nearby Wimbly Lu Cafe @ Jalan Riang. Not exactly very accessible but would be good if one is driving as this cafe is located inside some private housing estate. The interior was nicely dressed up, this I have to give credits to them. But for the food and beverage wise, I think it's slightly above average. Here's why:

Matcha Latte tasted like milk without much green tea taste. Heng I didn't order this, lol. Classic Hot Chocolate was rather nice though as the it was rich in chocolate taste. In addition, there were some marshmellow cubes added to the drink and will melt as time goes by. Interesting though.

Matcha Latte

Classic Hot Chocolate

Root Beer Cake

Choc Creme Brulee

Blackout Cake

The Root Beer Cake was another 'innovation'(?). But I can't really taste the root beer in the cake unlike the rest, weird. The chocolate taste was too overwhelming imo and making it lesser and bring out the root beer taste would be much appreciated. On the other hand. Choc Creme Brulee was ok, loved the top chocolate 'crispy' layer! Last but not least, the Blackout cake tasted rather average and a bit 'hard' as they didn't warm up the cake! Again, could have been better if the cake was served warm then I can enjoy the chocolate richness!

Talked abit about 'ang bao' issues. Interestingly, among ourselves, I hold the record for receiving the least amount of ang bao money. Personally, it is not a very good mindset to think that ang bao = making money. One shouldn't expect the ang bao inside must contain very big amount of money. Afterall, it is part of the Chinese culture and the money is supposed to signify certain meanings rather than it is taken as the face value instead.

Some people do have certain weird habits - record down who gave this amt for ang bao money?! Seriously need to do that meh? Just reciprocate back can liao lor.

Moving over to wedding dinner, of course one should expect certain range for the ang bao money as the couple, or rather, husband and wife should at least 'earn' back their spendings on this wedding dinner. But holding wedding dinner in SG can be quite 重本 in the sense that one table could easily hit $1,200 to $1,500. Some may even go beyond $1,500! So depend on what is the relationship between one and the husband and/or wife, the market rate for such ang baos is not less than $120.

I didn't been to a proper wedding dinner before so I am not sure what is the 'culture' in SG. But having been to a more informal version of wedding dinner, I could see the difference between SG and MY one. Of course the rates are different but one does get different service levels between the two. For wedding dinner held in SG, one do not need to dirty his hands or need to stand up and self-service himself or for the table. Because the service crew would help to divide the food accordingly and change plates after every meal. In MY, the guests are expected to help themselves with dividing the food and the plate is used throughout dinner. Hence, the difference is there.

For China ones, heard from Sebastian even more 誇張. They don't eat the food but instead 打包 their share into one single plastic bag?!!! 全部菜倒在一起,不會覺得味道怪怪的咩?怎麼吃啊?
