Continue where I left off + Neway Karaoke @ City Square

Yesterday had the mood to continue to work on my music collection. I think the most active days were from year 2007 to 2009, then after that due to studies, I went into hiberation mode and the music collection was left hanging there. Lots of backlog to clear: renaming the file names, adding lyrics and artworks. Quite a chore to do. On top of that, I need to do selection/filtering, nice ones come in, not nice ones will be kicked out.l

Luckily, I got a 得力助手 to help me speed up the process. Hehe...

Then today had a super impromptu outing to JB. Just as I thought no more karaoke session with Bay today, so I woke up rather late. Suddenly, PG called and said WX wanted karaoke. So off we went to Neway @ City Square. To my surprise, they also practised 3 hour rule on weekends - remembered I could sing from 1pm till 7pm on a weekday though - and it's more expensive (RM 33)! Heng got 30% discount for students.

After the karaoke, settled down for some crepe cake @ Humble Beginnings. Nice cakes and they were not expensive (RM 9.90). Didn't really like their matcha latte, tasted weird.

Even though this time round each person was entitled one hour to sing, but still, 還是不過癮 :(

When is my next karaoke time?

Neway Karaoke + Bornga Korean BBQ @ City Square

Met PG on bus 160 to cross the causeway - first time going Neway on a Sunday. Luckily bus 170 was fast, seeing the long queues of cars, can consider the bus has relatively no jam liao. Jin fast.

Though breakfast at home, the moment I stepped into City Square mall, I began to feel hungry. Ordered wanton mee to eat while waiting for the rest. *Shrugs, the shutter gate only opened when more and more people waiting at the entrance.*

Saw HH and ZX at Sharetea booth buying drinks. HH follow ZX's order and ordered exactly the same drink (Aigoo, something fishy going on wor!) coz HH always hiam the drink he chose not nice. *Not I want to say la, but you already so hiam in first place, the drink selection is quite narrow down by your preference liao, what to do?*

Left the couple hasn't arrive.

We 4 pax went check-in at 10.15 am first. Started singing and still the couple hasn't arrive!?

The package we had was K-lunch - 3 hour singing session with a drink and one serving of food. About the food, I had this sambal chilli prawn rice. The prawn not very fresh IMO, but consolation prize was the nicely done sunny side-up. Then the milk tea was too sweet IMO, not the usual teh I like from kopitiams.

Actually, 6 pax for 3 hours really not enough leh. I haven't had enough of karaoke lor! IMO, the best timing is one person is allocated 2-3 hours to sing. So if estimate one song typically last less than 5 mins, then 1 hour would have roughly about 15 song(?) Then 2-3 hours timing is considered enough, if not more, for most of us liao.

I really want to say this, having visited both SG's Kbox and MY's Neway karaoke outlets, I must really critique SG's Kbox is always on the losing side based on a lot of aspects. Why?

1. Currency. Fair and square, for Singaporeans spending in Malaysia, this is one obvious monetary benefit we could get.'

2. Price. Kbox gets really expensive these few years. No more $11 for 5 hours liao. The most ridiculous thing is the K.O.D., last time only 50 cents per pax. 9 years later, it had increased by 700% to $4! Plus plus somemore. I don't know WTH this is for because I only see Kbox got this weird pricing mechanism. At least Neway doesn't have this, probably if have also embedded in the price liao. And their way of doing business is not very nice IMO. For e.g., it was understood from past experience that the listed 2-7pm is for singing and also for room booking duration. However, now 2-7pm is still designated as the singing time zone, but the room is only booked for 3 hours. Sometimes, really felt a bit cheated and I really don't enjoy the member benefits anymore, not much discounts and such.

2. Sound system. Last week I visited Marina Square's branch and found that the sound was awful, especially if the song gets bassy. Neway one was okay. I'm not biased towards Neway though.

3. Infrastructure. Other than sound system, the infrastructures Neway has are much much better than Kbox one. Kbox still using 29 inch CRT TVs (still using these bulky CRTs?!) while Neway uses much bigger LCD TVs. Kbox has no mains socket, but Neway has one. Kbox still using wired mics, but Neway already use wireless mics and it's a challenge if you can manage to get a third mic from Kbox (niao in a sense). Neway, on the other hand, will adjust accordingly. There were 4 wireless mics for 6 of us. Service was really not bad! Oh ya, not to mention the readily available WiFi at Neway.

4. Song selection. Neway has a better list of songs coming from HK, regardless it's cantonese or mandarin. Otherwise, I feel they are on par.

Enough of comparison. We next moved around the mall and the mooncake carnival at ground level caught our attention. Went around to try out the mooncakes from Malaysia, which I always have been having since young. May not hold true for the rest though. We all agreed as one that the 冰皮月餅 from 東亞 were the nicest among all. So to conclude, not necessarily need to buy from BRANDED bakery, they may be overrated.

After ZX and HH left, towards dinner time, we went to this Korean restaurant called 본가. Heard from HL, it has outlets in SG, but some of the prices are almost double that of Malaysian counterparts.

The taste is as authentic as it can get. BBQ marinated pork tasted like satay! But the 돌솥비빔밥 and the 해물파전 were a little bit of letdown though. There was no 鍋巴 when by right the 돌솥 version should have some 鍋巴 one. On the other hand, the pancake was a bit too 'soft' and 'mashed'. I had better ones at Ju Shin Jung and Kim's Family lo.

After dinner went back to buy all the things we wanted. I bought 冰皮 durian, mango and green tea. For the 4th one, I bought the 酥皮芋頭月餅, this one not too sweet which I thought my family would like it. The 冰皮 ones are for try out the flavours only.

Graduation photo taking @ Gardens by the Bay

Early woke up at 6am today (the earliest time I woke up other than National Day) just to meet the rest of people at Bayfront MRT station at 7.45 am. That's early!

Supposed to be late by 5 mins liao, but I saw PG and HH on the same circle line train when PG should be 2-3 trains ahead of me. LOL... We were first to reach the meetup venue! After about 20 mins, FY,  SH and their bfs also arrived. Organiser reached last.

The weather was nice and Gardens by the Bay wasn't crowded at 9am. Thanks HL and Sebastian for the sandwich and the coffee-liquor-cake dessert! Recruit Express employees were there for dunno what events. Aigooo... Of all dates, must meet them at that time. =.= Nevertheless, we were like the centre of attraction whenever we go, some tourists/photographers took photos of us as they roamed about in the garden. Must charge $50 per photoshoot liao. Haha...

On a side note, I would like to shoot at Barrage as well. But I guess time is not forgiving enough - by the time we were done at Garden by the Bay, it was already past 11 am. The sun was high up in the sky, it's getting real hot and stuffy and under the gown I'm sweating like nobody's business.

Chilled at Beanstro. The banana chocolate drink ($7.60) was nice but the praline cheesecake ($7) was so-so only - had a weird taste which I can't readily accept ds.

Before heading home, had a quick lunch with PG at Yuhua Hawker Centre. Heard it houses one of the nicest Penang char kway teow in Singapore! $3.50 I think it's quite near to the original authentic taste. Delicious! But! Penang char kway teow has no hum wor... Localised version perhaps?

Friday - A going-out day

After 2 weeks staying at home, it's time to go out!

Morning met Angus for a lunch + some catch up. All the best to his FYP! Noticed can B has been renovated into a Koufu foodcourt. Very commerialised IMO. Anyway, the place looks the same except for the upper deck, where there are 2 stalls and is air-conditioned! (no wonder food is more expensive, haiz). Ordered chicken cutlet from western stall ($3.50), mediocre imo and the appearance looked like very underserved like that lo.

Afternoon went to check out Pepero offer at Jurong Point Watsons! Nokia closed shop though. (Windows + Nokia seems to be a suicidal move, how about Android + Nokia?) Yes, the offer still continue till 18 Sept! Yah, recently I'm hooked onto this Korean version of the highly popular and famous Japanese Pocky. After giving it as a gifts to friends, the response was 100% positive! They say this is better than the original pocky. It's a very nice snack. Very addictive.

At same time, went over to Hello Shop to see any new phone on display. Yes, the new Sony Xperia Z Ultra 6.44 inch display smartphone was there. Too big for my liking. Then played with LG Optimus G Pro 5.5 inch display smartphone. IMO, the range 5"-5.5" (or 5.7") is the best size to fit to my palm. So the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III please don't disappoint me!

Then went Plaza Singapura to check out the new Korean chicken snack 꿀닭 (Kkuldak). Ordered a small cup of spicy fried chicken topped with honey mustard ($4.50, slightly ex imo when you can get the same cup for 1000-2000 won).

After which went to Shine Korea trying to look for the above instant mee. It's very very very very spicy! But I just curious to see what is the price. But disappointed. Surprisingly no banana milk on sale wor.

Ended the day with a 5.4km run! Getting fatter and fatter by the day. Trying to slim down!

22/9/2012 & 15/10/2012 Korean feast!

22/9/2012 Pink Candy @ Beauty World
After a long day studying at S16, me and PG decided to sneak out and have a great dinner before heading home. So we visited Pink Candy to try out their Korean dishes. Pink Candy doesn't look as atas as 주막, so not sure about the food. But since we already noticed it during previous visits to 주막, why not try it out and see?

Ordered 자장면 ($5) while PG had seafood ramen ($6). Not expensive. You get what you pay lor. Still, I find 東方紅's 자장면 the nicest in Singapore liao.

Pink Candy @ Beauty World
Decided to satisfy myself, PG and HL with Korean food. So off we went to 주막 and Pink Candy (again!) located at Beauty World.

While at 주막, we ordered 2 dishes: dumplings ($12) and 해물파전 ($15). Gosh, the dumplings were big and very tasty! On the other hand, the 해물파전 was not bad as well. No complains on these 2 dishes.
After 주막, we went to the neighouring restaurant called Pink Candy and decided to order their version of 닭갈비 ($42). The serving was HUGE!!!!! Couldn't finish it lor. Compared to Big Mama, I still prefer Big Mama's version more. Hehe...
Pink Candy

Because it's on a Monday, the cafe was rather deserted. In the end, the aunty owner sat down, ate and chat with another guy (I think it's her husband or some customer). Suddenly, it went black out! What a surprise dining experience lo! Haha...

Gadget hoot for year 2012

For year 2012, I didn't spend on computer nor handphone. So my investment went to get a MP3 player and a camera.

Cowon J3

Mentioned this in a previous post already, but not as detailed as this one lol..

On 12 May 2012, after much consideration for the past 1 year plus, I decided to get Cowon J3 MP3 player at Amazon. Thanks to HWZ forum for letting me to get to know Cowon. Cowon is quite well-known for its portable MP3 players as it offers much more room for equaliser customisation. In other words, the sound quality is the best in user's opinion. For some reason, Cowon never make it big in SG. Don't know why. Perhaps the iPod influence is much more prominent. Sony also has its own lineup of walkman players, however I still prefer Cowon as it's more wu hua than Sony lo. Made in Korea vs Made in Malaysia/China.

After hearing news that J3 is going to be discontinued, I became a bit more rushed to get J3 as soon as possible. It's quite hard to get its product in SG. However, Amazon do sell them at very competitive prices, hence I decided to buy from them. The 16GB black version cost US$199.45. Add on shipping cost of US$16.48 to it makes $215.93. Finally, UOB charged me S$281.75. Less than $300 still not too bad.

The J3 is considered the legendary 'flagship' model from Cowon. It was released in 2010. Why people love it so much is because of the following points:

1. It supports storage expansion via microSD card, in a sense that it increases MP3 player's 'longevity' when in future, the MP3 collection got increased by a big amount. This one already knocked out Sony and Apple, because their MP3 players cannot expand storage space.

2. Super long playback hours. Cowon claims up to 64 hours of music playback. While I do not get 64 hours, somewhat around 40 hours is considered very good already. The newer models like Z2 only offers 22 hours playback, but it has better hardware and running on Android.

3. AMOLED screen. AFAIK, Apple and Sony doesn't employ AMOLED technology onto the screens. So Cowon wins here!

4. Simple hardware. Simple software. Simple to use. J3 doesn't have very powerful processor and GPU, hence the long playback hours is guaranteed. And it removed the plague slide button configuration found on its predecessor, S9. So buttons are made as simple as they can get to maximise duability. Since I have a smartphone to handle tasks, pure music listening rely on J3, so I only require J3 to perform well in playback music can le.

The package arrived on 1 June and I was quite happy to see the innovative package Cowon has provided. When inverted, the plastic cover could act as a small pot! The rest would most likely give you a normal package box. This shows Cowon paid attention to small details. Kudos to them!

Also, I ordered screen protector (US$7.99) and a casing (US$16.99) from RearthUSA (I suspect it's a Korean brand) to protect this jem - it looks fragile though! The quality was very very good, especially the casing - the unique surface texture tell me that it can last quite long.

First impression with the MP3 was very good. Now I don't have to turn on the screen to change song, everything can be done with the dedicated physical buttons on it. SQ was perfect as I tune it to my liking. It's not buttery smooth like iPod, but I can bear with some jerkiness and laginess. Afterall, I do not keep scrolling up and down on J3.

Panasonic LX7 digital camera

I already made plans last year to buy a DSLR, most likely to support my grad trip to Korea/HK. However, once again, people at HWZ were quick to share the offer on Amazon - Panasonic LX7 going for US$299. Considering it goes for at least S$600 in SG, it's really a steal! Here's the catch, Panasonic doesn't honor international warranty.

This LX7 was released in September 2012 and feature the fastest lens available on a non-DSLR - F1.4. The camera sensor is newly developed so I suppose everything about this LX7 is as good as it gets. Also, I have been pondering whether should I get LX7 or Olympus XZ-1 (older 2011 model) as it was also on offer at Amazon.

Without much consideration and based on the fact that me (or kz a bit, my family) doesn't have a proper camera, I went to order LX7 and had it delivered to SG by ComGateWay (CGW) as it has promotion for the month of November 2012. So total I only spent S$382 for this awesome camera!

So this was my first time buying something during exam period =X While studying for the exam, I actually kept looking at the delivery status. Tsk, really waste my time unecessarily. T.T

2 dinner events in September 2012

2/9/2012 Late dinner at Pies & Coffee @ Rochester Mall

It was a very impromptu dinner gathering after a hard day with studying at NUS as only HL and PG bought the discount vouchers for this newly open cafe at this quiet Rochester Mall.

It's a cafe selling mainly pies and I have to say they are not too bad, a bit ex tho. Spent $9.60. Perhaps I'm not a big fan of pies so I don't know how to judge them. But a consolation prize was the cookies stored in a jar at the retriving counter are FOC, which I took almost the whole jar of cookies - they were nice!

As the cafe wasn't crowded on the cooling Sunday evening, we spent a bit of time chit-chatting before the dreading week started again.

29/9/2012 닭갈비 at Big Mama @ Tiong Bahru

Big Mama!

It was PG's effort who found this restaurant on Saturday evening. Without any second thought, I said let's visit this restaurant. We took a bus there and it wasn't really difficult to be located. Just some 5-10 mins walk from Tiong Bahru MRT only!

The restaurant looked rather new and modern without any traditional Korean feel to it. The owner is a ethic Korean 아줌마 who was previously a teacher in Korea and the biggest selling point of this restaurant is that she moves around the restaurant helping diners to stir-fry its famous dish - 닭갈비! Though she didn't help us lo. Sad sad :( lol But, on the other hand, she offered us handmade Korean mooncakes, which looked and tasted very much like mochi, instead of Chinese mooncakes.

(Dakgalbi) is a famous Korean dish with chicken meat, Korean rice cakes, vegetables, often with potato strips, topped with Korean chilli sauce and stir-fried together. It's so nice that it has now become one of the my top favourite Korean dishes, with the other one as 자장면.

As much as I could remember, I was really looking forward savouring this dish ($15, no GST and service charge) coz it looks really attractive on photos. Both of us fell in love with this famous Korean dish after taking our first bite! It's spicy, literally hot, chicken, perfect for my tastebuds! Another good idea is that one could order additional rice ($1.50 or $3, can't remember), seaweed and stir-fry with some remaining 닭갈비 to become fried rice! Tasted nice as well.

Ahh, as I type this blog, begin to feel hungry liao :(

19/8/2012 Nicholas's farewell

*Had a nice lunch 'treat' from Bay coz I actually forgot to return him the money ^^ =.=

*Found yellow tag quite ok too, maybe it's the instructor who made the atmosphere light and fun.

It has been a year since Nicholas left SG to Beijing to complete his 2-year 'attachment' of his double degree TCM course. Time flies. Now that I have graduated from NTU and he has another year left (actually it's less than a year now) in Beijing to complete his attachment. Well, it doesn't really change anything if he stays in SG or Beijing. I am not trying to mean anything but just that all of us were in final year and things were really hectic for that 2 semesters.

So what really happened on 19 August 2012?

As I had bus concession, I took bus down to Orchard and changed to bus 36 to go airport. Read some notes for FYP on iPad to try to gain something out of it. The rest were at the food court @ T3 and I wrote farewell message on the card. Also, he received the farewell gift we had prepared for him - a set of instax markers and a set of metallic feel colored pens. While HL gave him a mugger shirt! Haha!

Not only our group was there, but his other friends also took the time to send him off as well. Not too 冷清!

Oh ya, Nicholas also personally pen down personal message to each of us!

After the photo session, we went to Quiznos to have a simple dinner and then off he went into the departure hall. I then made my way back to Jurong by 36 and then 48 and then 185. 48 is fast if one is gonna travel from east to west or vice versa. Shall take this bus again if I were to go East Coast Park.

So now everything has settled down, it was back to school again. Everyday studying the notes, understanding FYP, the cycle went on and on for the coming 2 semesters... No life at all. T.T
