The Haze is Back

We didn't expect this, but it didn't come with a surprise.

Taken from another forum, forums.hardwarezone.com, these pictures show the severity of the haze on 7 Oct 2006, the worst day of all...

Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节

First of all, wish you all a happy mid-autumn festival! 中秋节快乐!

Today's air quality hasn't got any better, in fact it turned another way round - it got worse!
Since two weeks ago, I have been noticing that there was a tinge of burnt smell. Something strange though. Only recently then the media reported it that air quality drops.

This entry should be about mid-autumn festival, why am I complaining about air quality? Simply because I can't stand it, so I'm here to frustrate! haha

Ok, speaking about mid-autumn festival. It is a very special festival indeed whereby the centre of attention is the moon. It is said that moon will be the biggest, brightest on this day. True or not? Waiting to be verified. haha But I must say that given the hazy air, it is quite difficult to see the moon. Sad.

Mooncake is one of the delicacies served during the festival. It comes with a wide variety. However I liked traditional the most (传统月饼). I find others impossible to beat the traditional ones because simply they only satisfy your taste buds without bringing out the real festival taste.

Basically there are 5 types of mooncakes:
  1. Traditional mooncake. (传统月饼) This type of mooncake is quite commonly seen in shops. It has a thin crust with lots of fillings which can varies also. The outer side of the crust is golden brown in colour. Looks nice and tastes well too.
  2. Snowy skin mooncake <- whatever lah! (冰皮月饼) This is another variant. It must be refrigerated at all times. The crust is spongy and you need to tear the crust really hard, before you chew it! haha...
  3. Pudding mooncake (布丁月饼) This is a new type of mooncake to appear. It really looks like a pudding and tastes quite close to pudding. The only difference is that there are fillings inside the mooncake.
  4. Mini mooncake. (迷你月饼) Shan't comment further. It can be one of the above 3 types.
  5. Wacky mooncake. (不可思议月饼) This type of mooncake is usually very expensive. Too bad we can only look but cannot eat!

Mooncakes are often consumed with tea. I wonder why mooncakes sold here do not carry a small packet of tea leaves?

Sentosa outing on 23-9-2006

It was planned more than a month ago. It was initiated by Nancy.

As expected, it was a one-fifth class outing - with only 8 people turned up out of the 41 people in class 301/401.

The past few days were very tiring for me, with those gatherings with different friends. It just made me felt exhausted and tired. What made it worse was that my mobile phone was low on energy. So I had to wake up at 7 in the morning just to get it charged in 2.5 hours time before I went out. I went to sleep again.

This time I woke up at 10. It was so late! I quickly jumped out of bed with the head feeling dizzy and get myself prepared. Took a bath and quickly packed my cd walkman, water bottle and mobile phone accessories, of course. But the most important thing of all was money, I must ensure I had enough money for my expenditure for the day.

Left home at 10.40a.m. I knew I was going to be late. Don't care about those early birds though. haha. Took 335 and saw Sharon boarding the same bus! haha, we began smsing each other and she told me the guy at the front of the bus looked like Yuan Sheng. Does he? I don't think so lor.

Hehe, Huaian and Pui Han were the early birds and Yin Boon was the latest, as usual lar... I'm immuned to it long long ago! We had our economical Japanese cuisine at Kobayashi @ JE. I had scramble noodle pizza. I found the taste had a strong smell of the noodle, but anyway, it cost only $3.90 and included a drink.

Then initially Huaian wanted to call off the Sentosa outing, but we resisted and insisted we want to go. Haha, any place far away is always good for us, I don't know why. I think it is our nature to think that we should explore faraway places rather than those we always visit lor... In the end, we went Sentosa as planned.

Nancy was discovered to be sleeping at the time we called her and she promised to join us for dinner. In the end she never turn up. The thing is she really wanted to join us for dinner but we did not call her to wake her up?!

Pui Han was a lunatic - she kept singing 燃烧吧.... I think she has fallen in love with that song. But nonetheless, she's very entertaining! Don't say I did not even say a good thing about you okay?! So we were in the MRT and we were the loudest lot, we just chatted everything under the sun and this Pui Han would suddenly burst out something ridiculous out of the blue. LOL we laughed of course.

Sentosa is always seen with foreign tourists happily strolling and taking pictures around the attractions and the local youngsters just occupy the nice beach, to enjoy the sun, to play games, or to relax.

Of course we went there to enjoy ourselves and the warm-hearted Huaian was hoping that we could chalk up some money out so that we could buy a volleyball. I think it was Huaian who wanted to play beach volleyball but the rest don't want. In the end he forked out $28.50 to purchase the volleyball which we used to play a horrific game that lasted for less than 5 minutes. It must be a sad case for Huaian lor... haha

Saw S28 also having an outing.

Then we soaked our legs with seawater. Wow, it was very very cooling. I just like the sensation. That's it.

The girls bought ice cream and they nicely treated me with a tiny mouthful of the individual flavours. Of course the ice cream were nice when you could have bought a tub of 1.5 litres for the same price. Next time I should try out myself. Heheh...

We took the Skyride just for fun. It cost $4 for one-way and $6 for return. We bought the return tickets and I was enjoying the scenery while the others were complaining about the height and the 'open concept' of the cable car. Meng How was threating to shake our gondola while Yin Boon grabbed and exerted so much pressure on Huaian's hands that it almost turned into zebra's skin. LOL.

On our way back, I saw one of the shoes has fallen off. Felt pity for the woman though.

After that, we crossed the bridge at Palawan and went up the observation tower which looked like the Twin Tower of Sentosa. The view over the south of Singapore was great and we took the opportunity to take a group photo.

Played Big 2. Then came Sinyi! She looked so joyful upon joining us! haha...

Initiated to have Japanese cuisine and majority agreed with me. We had dinner at Sakae Sushi, I ordered Ten Don for $8.90. It was nice as exclaimed by the others lor. I think they were jealous of my set meal. haha...

Yuan Sheng came and immediately he took out his newly purchased DSLR and we took photos happily. haha...

Watched muscial fountain at 8.40p.m. and then Yin Boon almost fainted. Oh, I think she felt uncomfortable by the continuous flashing light and the laser. But never mind, that was the end of our outing and we head our homes after this.

Really enjoyed going out with you guys!

22-9-2006 Another outing

Woke up quite early (9 in the morning) just to get myself prepared as someone was coming to my house later.

And then a phone call came in at ten-something and I was stunned.

The guest would only come at noon. It was him who made me woke up early and it was him who wanted to be late. Reason? Overslept.

Nonetheless, spent our time browsing through images and videos and a while chatting. Then we head for McDonald's for lunch in the mid-afternoon.

I ordered 'Fan-tastic' set meal. Don't call me outdated, okay?! I seldom have fast food at McDonald's and the fan-tastic was an expensive meal to me. The set meal cost me $6.20. Upon settling my tooth over the burger, I could expect the taste to be quite different. In fact, it has been a mystery for the taste. I found the rice tasted funny, partly because I'm not used to it and because it consisted of mushroom.

Me and my friend took a walk to Jurong Point since we were so full. Just exercise for the good and you saved money!

Jurong Point is forever bustling with crowds, mainly teenagers hanging out arcades, cinemas... It is no wonder it was voted to be the best neighbourhood shopping centre in Singapore in a survey conducted by The Straits Times. Haha, but the truth is, it offers a lot more than other shopping malls and I heard that it would undergo expansion.

Then we sat down at Kopitiam at the third storey and had some beverages. I had iced milo. $1.50 is expensive because I could make a similar one at home at a much cheaper cost. LOL

Came another friend at around five plus. So he and the guest went to buy dinner. I was so full - I didn't have my dinner. Ha, can save money again. Then after that, we went to watch the movie 'The Haunted Apartment'. It is a Japanese horror film which tell the story of a haunted building. The residents living there had suffered depression where they have to abide a set of strange and ridiculous rule. For example, every single resident has to cross over the white line and get within the building premise before every midnight.

Want to move out? Sure, but you need to get a new resident moving in before you can move out.

The production crew chose to film at the real site - that is the building said to be haunted in Japan and the effect was really errie. The whole building appeared worn out because it was an old building.

Strange things happened. Firstly, the child kept going horizontally on the floor in a systematic manner without any external force. Secondly, soldiers appeared on the scene. Why they appear? Is it because the old man had abandoned them while on war and escaped from death and now they came back for revenge? Or simple because just to pass the time? Not very logical here.

Then one family just do not heed the advice and they moved out of the building when it was not the time. Therefore at midnight of that day, they were dead.

After that, the female lead decided to explore on her own and attempted to break the curse and she succeeded! Of course, the other residents move out at once. lol, the corpse was like disfigured and it doesn' look scary. I think the ghost looked scarier. lol. The whole story ended when the female lead felt pity for her and decided to stay forever with the corpse.

Kbox on 20 Sep

Immediately after the F Maths paper, rushed home to take a shower and then meet up with Chee Chuan at Jurong Point at 12.15 p.m.

Tour around Jurong Point. Bought nothing. Without knowing we were supposed to be late.

Yida was even more late. We arrived at Jurong East earlier than him! Haha, what a joke! The irony was that he lives nearer to JE MRT station than we do and he took his own sweet time strolling to the meeting point.

Had Japanese food and then we head for Kbox.

The kbox session was nice! They did not chase us out. We didn't know Yida had recorded our voices into mp3 format for more than 2 hours (a whopping 131MB) and when I listened to it the next day, I was laughing at myself for the awful noise.

*P/S: I was praised by Sharon for making a good start of the song 理想情人 by 杨丞琳. It makes me feel I want to frequent kbox more often!

Preliminary Examination

Sounds so strict, isn't it. I shan't discuss too much on it.

Day 1: GP P1 was worse than the mock common test. Basically, I think I wrote out of point. P2 was worse than paper 1 as I did not finish the AQ, it is worth 8 marks. F Maths was alright, couldn't do complex number, I just don't like the roots of unity. Other concepts of complex number are alright. And then spotted typo error in the paper, does it spell good news for me? I don't know.

Day 2: Physics P1 was easy. P2 was managable, but I would expect some mistakes and couldn't do some small parts which require good explanations.

Day 3: Mathematics P1. Quite easy though some mistakes again! Saw wrongly!

Day 4: Chemistry P3 was toughest of all! Couldn't finish everything and some questions did wrongly. Partly because I see wrongly again! =.=

Day 5: Physics P3. Black out at the very last 10 minutes. Dots....

Day 6: Mathematics P2. Mechanics was quite challenging, statistics was alright but still see the value wrongly. =.=

Day 7: Chemistry P1 and P2. P2 was easy but P1 was not.

Day 8: F Maths P2. Left out the question on chi-squared distribution based on normal distribution. The part on exponential distribution couldn't do.

The prelim ended.

Update 2

Me sneaked out of Singapore for a very short holiday during the duration from 2 Sep to 5 Sep

At Genting Highlands, I watched the magical show Mysteria. Nice show but felt pity for the tigers. They merely appeared at the stage for less than 5 minutes. It was f.o.c.

Then I bought lollipop. Don't laugh at me okay?! Took few days to finish eating the piece of sugar.

Don't accuse me of not studying for my preliminary examination. I brought physics notes to study - and really studied!

More-than-a-month update

I have been lazy to blog for the past 30 odd days.
In the following consecutive posts, I will update on various events which happened to me so to satisfy your desire to update yourself constantly.

31-8-2006 Teacher's Day Celebration
Woke up at usual time for the day and changed into the custom-designed Yoga Mass Display T-shirt. The funniest thing of all is that the logo was printed 90 degrees to the left! Haha! Then came the dark clouds, followed by rain. The rain was big initially but gradually it got smaller and smaller and eventually stopped. So we did yoga on the school field and at the same time we were praying that the lightning doesn't strike us (as there was lightning). Fortunately, no one was hurt.

After that we got very excited and very high (we didn't fall lar!), so we threw our caps and threw the renowned 'yoga master' high up to the sky. Haha, it was a funny sight.

After that it was concert time. Nothing much to talk about except some funny scenes. Quite boring anyway and I was busying playing games on the mobile phones.

The concert was super long and I was yearning to end it off immediately. Met up with ex-huayians and we jolly strolled back to our alma mater to visit our teachers. Chin Chin and Vincent appeared while Yin Boon was better off with sleeping. We chatted a lot with Mrs Siow and she wanted to see our good results when we receive next year. Feeling pressurized by her few words, how could I score all distinctions?

Don't care about that, I would never meet her expectations - except mathematics.

We head for Jurong Point's KFC for lunch and then decided to play pool at the 5th floor. Sadly, the attendant strongly refused to allow us into the premise - simply because of the school long pants wore by Huaian. Haha, it's a sad thing though. We thought we would be undiscovered. The K-pool @ Jurong Point is a new branch which started its business only few months ago. But would prefer Jurong East's K-pool. The uncarpeted floor of K-pool @ Jurong Point made it seems small. What if a ball projects off the table? The sound generated by the hitting ball and the floor would be loud, I think.

Never mind about the K-pool - we decided to play baskeball at my college. The rain in the morning made the whole game more tricky. We had difficulty holding the ball with the suitable grip and prevent the ball from rolling off the court area was a big business. I think we spent more time chasing the ball than shooting it. I even had cuts on my knee area as I was chasing after the ball. The mischievous stained ball made our T-shirt and pants dirty and we looked funny.

Tired from the game.

I did it to impress teacher

The event went like this.

Was having lecture on Tuesday as the first period.
Suddenly, Mr Sia said he was impressed by my assignment and tutorial when he was marking my class's work. I knew this was not the first time he said that and well expected that he would announce it out.

The real motive behind this: since my batch is the last Further Mathematics cohort. The Further Mathematics subject would go into history from next year onwards for all junior colleges only. So I might as well put in more effort to polish my last few tutorials and assignments to let Mr Sia happy.

And when he is happy, I'm happy too!

Haha! When Mr Sia said that, my heart was pounding very fast. I was so high then. Mind you, I didn't take illicit substance - I'm a good citizen, okay?!

I don't remember Mrs Siow (my secondary school maths teacher) did impressed by my neat work, but my handwriting was well accepted by my friends for 'printer-like work'.

lol... It is something to proud of, isn't it?

Frustrated with my computer 生电脑的气

GB
I am very frustrated with my computer now...

Yesterday afternoon I was using the 1.8Ghz computer. A brief introduction before I address the problem to prevent confusion.

This computer has 2 hard disks attached, a 20GB and a 40GB one. The 20GB Seagate hard disk is used to install programs and windows, it is so-called the "active hard disk". The 40GB Maxtor hard disk works likewise a thumbdrive. It is like the permanent thumbdrive attached to the computer and is used to store files like MP3, photos, documents and application setup files. It is so called the "passive hard disk".

I was using the 40GB hard disk and accessing the "Pictures" folder. It has lots of all types of pictures with different formats inside (jpeg, png, bmp, gif etc.). After which the computer became very busy and eventually, the mouse couldn't move. I restarted the computer and then this folder is no longer can be accessed.

This spells trouble for me as I have more than 1000 items inside this folder!!! Luckily, I made a backup on another computer and those files which I used to transfer from other computers to this 40GB harddisk I did not delete. Otherwise I had to start from nothing!

Preliminary, I suspected the computer had a hard time in displaying so much things at one go. Given the computer has close to 786 MB of RAM, it should not be spared if this was to be the case. But never mind, I had learnt a lesson, next time I think I should be more careful with better file management.

To those who holds on our outing photos or HuaYi's 2004 401 related photos, please send me!

SC

BBQ

Had a nice birthday BBQ with friends.

The birthday girl is YB. haha, happy birthday wor!
Actually HA and YS were supposed to be there, but both of them didn't turned up, with HA being sick and YS had something on.

Nonetheless, we had a great time, although 4 of us going and I'm the only boy. >.<

I arrived at JE MRT at about noon and expected someone to be earlier than me. But to my surprise, I was the first person to be there! I called up birthday girl and you know what she replied?

BEN: "Where are you now?"
YB: "I'm still waiting for bus..."

At that moment, I'm going to faint! 20 minutes more to here! I think I'm going to window shopping for a while with SY (who arrived a bit later). Then the whole lot 7 of us (except for SZ) went together to Downtiwn East and the first thing we did was play pool.

Nice game but I didn't win once... So sad....

Came SZ. She was the late queen of the day! lol

Then we played arcade, Daytona was fun. I was the lousiest driver around. lol

Basketball game was fun too, but we weren't professionals. Out of the highest score 800 odds, we managed hundred plus points. =.=

Then we went back to chalet for card games. It was boring. Could have expected something fun. Wewent to beach for a stroll, and meanwhile still missing our kbox session, we began singing using my phone's MP3 files. Free of charge though! LOL

BBQ time! I liked the food, but I didn't become the food king. I ate just the right amount lor. Thanks for the food ya!

The highlight of the day was actually the blackjack game dealed by YB's dad. Haha, throughout the game, it was a funny scene with those kinds of expressions on their faces. Luckily I didn't bet, otherwise I could not be able to go home. LOL

Kbox outing

Today woke up at 10, because I slept late.

Then took bus to Clementi Bus Interchange. Never know that YB was on the same bus throughout the journey...

Sharon, as unusual, was late than us... LOL

At last, SY came and we had lunch... I had chicken chop, quite nice lar... LOL

We shared the dining table with an uncle who was surprisingly polite. He said 'enjoy your meal' before he left. It really makes our day. haha!

Then we sang wholeheartly with our wishlist songs... I sang 阿牛陈庆祥)'s 大肚腩 and 对面的女孩看过来. It was entertaining... My voice matched 阿牛's!! lol

Then after that, the personnel there came in at 5 plus and told us our time was up.
We only came in almost at 2 and yet you tell us to leave at 5?! We always thought it was up till 7 in the evening! Not a good service! Might consider go another branch...

Sharon, YB - singing skills still not bad
SY - a bit lag at times... and low pitch also!

12-5-2006 outing

yo yo... another post again!

I went out with friends lor since I have not keep in touch with them for a long time. They are SZ, PH, SY, YS, CC.

I was one of the earliest to reach JE MRT station. But however I met SZ on my way and she was going to return borrowed books, so we went to JE library together.

Then we walked together to JE MRT control station there, whereby SY, CC and PH were already waiting. They did not change much from appearance. But their characters changed a lot a lot.

PH had gone berserk, while SY became more open-mined and tends to be a chatterbox. CC only realised that she was so daring during her secondary school days. LOL

We first went to Douby Ghaut to buy movie tickets for Mission Impossible III.

Side track a bit...
MI3 is an action-packed movie. I found it quite nice given the superb audio and visual effects. However the temperature of the air-conditioning was rather too cold to my liking... I couldn't stop my jaws from vibrating. The seats were big and comfy and the movie threatre was spacious. It doesn't look like a movie threatre, but rather, a performing art centre.

Ok... back to track

After that, we went to Plaza Singapura to have some neoprints taken... It was so funny when we took and my hands blocked my face in one of the snapshots! Such a candid shot.

Others were well taken. All of our faces can be clearly seen.

Then we went for some food. I had only iced lemon tea as I was not too hungry at that time. We started gossiping amongst ourselves.

YS had the ball started rolling. After that, was my turn, then SZ, CC and lastly PH...
I learned some incident from the gossips which were rather surprising. Hehe...

Meanwhile SY had addicted to the neoprints... It was as though she had seen the neoprints for the first time! (Sorry but no offence... :p) She kept looking and looking at it! As such, she nearly forgot to keep the neoprints properly... =.=

It drizzled. We walked in the rain. It was rather sentimental as well. We couldn't stop gossiping... Muahahaha... :D

The movie session began...

The movie session ended! Yay!

We took the MRT back to JE. Had our dinner. We started shooting amongst ourselves. All except for YS were fine with taking photos. I wonder why?

Photos looked nice, of course. But the highlight of the day is not here yet. *grin*

We went to the neoprints shop to have our 2nd take. This time was not a very good one because the time limit was short despite all photos were decently taken. Oops! I revealed too much of my braces, and now it looked ugly for me.

Then I suggested that I don't mind having our 3rd take. I was going too high then. I needed the neoprints encore! Hehe, they all also don't mind spending that extra money and they agreed to my suggestion.

This time was even more hilarious. We were too high then. All funny and creative poses! I loved the boy-with-boy and the girl-with-girl (those who were there should know *heheh!*).

Thanks for staying with me all day long...

Genting Trip during the long weekend

Finally a break for me!

14th April was Good Friday, a public holiday in Singapore. So I seized this opportunnity to have a break midst preparing for my A level exam. Furthermore, I did not travel to Malaysia during the March holidays.

14 APRIL

It rained on Good Friday. But lucky all of us were on the car, so we did not have to drench ourselves even before we set off.

It was not a very good day though, even it's so-called the good day for Christians. There were traffic jams everywhere, before Singapore customs, before Malaysia customs, on all main roads in Malaysia. Guess lots of people were getting out of Singapore for a short holidays.

And that time was the dismissal time for Malaysian schools, this added more cars on the road. It did not look nice though.

Had lunch at Senai, a small town in Johor (about 25km from Johor Bahru). It was char kway teow. Though nice, but I found it a bit too salty. I got thristy not long after the lunch. =.=

Next was a few hours on the highway, nothing to look at though. As I felt tired, I went for a very short nap. As we were near to the destination, I felt excited and couldn't sleep thereafter. haha

Short chit-chats between parents and relatives were unevitable. I sat there stayed quiet, as I felt a bit tired lar. Then we had early dinner at a nearby mamak stall=.=

I ordered hor fun. The plate had a generous filling of hor fun for the price of RM3.50 (approx. S$1.60). Surprisingly, I did not finish it. I was not hungry at that time! What's more? I had my lunch at 2. Then we set off to Genting Highlands after dinner.

It was raining whole day long in Malaysia and the weather did not showed any indication that the rain was to stop immediately. The driving condition on highway was rather hazardous as you could not see far in front of you and the lane marking blurred by the rain.

After Sungei Besi Toll Booth (south of Kuala Lumpur), our car was tightly packed among other hundreds, if not thousands of cars which were heading to Kuala Lumpur city. It was an unusual sight as normally this road is jam-free.

Never mind, I thought, after making a turn into another road (MRR2), we might avoid the horrific traffic jam. But to my dismay, we just meet another traffic jam! Sian to the max now...

It was not declared as public holiday on 14 April and yet there were traffic jams everywhere in Kuala Lumpur! Maybe the office workers were heading home from the stressful work for the day? Or people just come out out of nowhere?

The speed of traffic was slow, far slower than the speed limit of 80km/h. I don't think anybody sped though.

Here's one thing I want to comment: two mighty trucks carrying cars
They were the slowest lot and yet they took up the right most lane... What nonsense?! In front of them was nothing but clear of traffic! We could have been faster if not for these 2 trucks
What made me feel very ridiculous is they kept changing lanes from left to right and from right to left. The traffic was slow, you cannot escape from it anyway, just stay in the lane.

Forget about that. We turned into Karak Highway. One thing about this highway is that it cuts through numerous mountains at the start near Kuala Lumpur and gradually flatten itself as it nears Karak. I really liked the reflectors on the road though. They were so bright upon shining of the headlamps of the cars and felt as if we were on the airport runway! :p

Landslide occured near the bypass at Genting Highlands which leads cars down the mountain. We did not know this. So we were puzzled why the one way road became double way road.

The weather up there was cold. About 15C outdoor I would say, and about 17/18C indoor. I had my jackets on. hehe The hotel room we got was ok, at least better than prevoius trip here.

15 APRIL

Woke up at about 8.45 in the morning. As usual , the weather was cold but it did not rain. I had a nice sleep throughout the night. We thought the cup noodles manufacturer was kind enough to include forks but to our disappointment we did not find any. As a result, we could not eat noodles!

Then we headed to a restaurant which served Chinese cuisine, i.e. dim sum. The dim sum they served tasted good, I would say and the price was ok for the service quality we got.

Then the whole afternoon I was at the arcades getting tickets for redemptions of gifts.

We descended from Genting at the evening and the moment we hitted the sea level, it rained again. The city of Kuala Lumpur was in the wet throughout the day.

16 APRIL

Set off at 11 AM, arrived in Singapore at 4 PM

Cut crap short, here are the pictures!

过了吉隆坡以南的Sungai Besi收费站,马上就遇到塞车,还是几公里长!
